Effective October 1, 2011, employers hiring Caribbean foreign workers under the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) in British Columbia, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, and those employing greenhouse and nursery workers in Saskatchewan can no longer deduct $2.16 per working day from the worker’s wage to offset the cost of housing utilities. This deduction may only be applied to Caribbean workers employed in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and in sectors other than greenhouses and nurseries in Saskatchewan.
