When you, as a parent, friend or family member, open a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) on behalf of a child and apply for the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), the Government of Canada will deposit a percentage of your own contribution directly into the RESP. To date, more than three million children have benefited from the Canada Education Savings Grant.
Children up to and including the year they turn 17 are eligible to receive the education savings grant if an RESP has been opened for them.
To ensure your beneficiary will continue to receive Canada Education Savings Grant after the age of 15, visit Canlearn.ca to find out about the special rules for RESPs.
The level of Canada Education Savings Grant the Government of Canada could deposit into your RESP depends on the net income of the beneficiary's family. Visit Canlearn.ca to find out how much grant money your beneficiary could receive.
Applying for the Canada Education Savings Grant only takes a few simple steps. You can also apply for additional CESG if the primary caregiver of your beneficiary is a recipient of the Canada Child Tax Benefit.
Depending on the beneficiary's family net income, the child may also qualify for the Canada Learning Bond (CLB). Ask your RESP Provider if your beneficiary would be eligible for the CLB.
