Unique Knowledge Base

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada’s Labour Program possesses a unique repository of information on labour matters in Canada. It collects, analyzes and disseminates a wide range of facts and figures on labour relations, collective agreements and workplace trends, including developments in federal, provincial and territorial labour laws across the country.

The information is widely used by policy-makers, scholars and those involved in collective bargaining and is accessible in a variety of ways:

  • through the Labour Program web site;
  • by subscribing to the electronic newsletter Workplace Bulletin;
  • through direct on-line access to the Negotech database;
  • by phone via a toll-free number; and
  • through on-line request for specific research needs.

To respond to the changing realities of Canadian workplaces, the Labour Program also conducts research on developing issues such as work-life balance and the aging workforce.

The Workplace Bulletin

Issued twice a month, the Workplace Bulletin contains information on ongoing developments in unionized Canadian workplaces and provides access to timely news about industrial relations and collective bargaining. The Workplace Bulletin is free by subscription and is also posted on the Labour Program Web site Readers are updated on:

  • negotiated wage data;
  • benefits and working conditions;
  • major work stoppages (strikes and lockouts);
  • current and upcoming negotiations;
  • labour organizations;
  • union membership; and
  • innovative workplace practices.

Negotech

Negotech is a free on-line searchable labour relations database. It provides access to the full text of collective agreements as well as summary reports that highlight important benefit changes and the latest wage adjustments. Users can also carry out customized data searches.

Other Products

The Labour Program also offers:

  • Tables and analysis of wage adjustments contained in collective agreements. The tables contain historical data on major wage settlements, covering 500 or more employees, by month, quarter and year for all industries, the public and private sectors, and all jurisdictions;
  • Lists of current and upcoming key negotiations and recently ratified collective agreements (including links to the summary reports contained in Negotech);
  • An annual calendar listing expiry dates of collective agreements covering 500 or more employees, as well as dates for re-opening of negotiations in the following year;
  • A chronological overview of work stoppages in Canada since 1976;
  • A weekly report and a year-to-date report on major work stoppages in Canada involving 500 or more employees.

The Labour Program provides a one-stop information service that offers prompt access to a full range of collective bargaining data and other information on workplace trends.
