On December 2, 2009, the Canadian National Railway and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference put an end to their work stoppage. The parties agreed to the federal appointment of an arbitrator to resolve all wage and benefits issues and any other outstanding matters that both parties agree to send to the arbitrator.
On December 18, the previous minister of Labour, Minister Ambrose appointed Mr. Andrew Sims, former chair of the Alberta Labour Relations Board and vice-chair of the Canada Industrial Relations Board, as arbitrator. Minister Ambrose was “confident that, working with Mr. Sims, the parties can successfully reach a collective agreement and improve their working relationship.” Mr. Sims’ decisions will be final and binding on both parties.
