After consultation with stakeholders in the aviation industry, the Labour Program recently proposed amendments to the Aviation Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Part II of the Canada Labour Code allows the department to make amendments to these regulations, ensuring consistency between the Aviation Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (COHSR) and the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
The amendments are designed to improve sanitary conditions, noise reduction, electrical safety and reporting procedures for those who work aboard aircraft. The amendments also change on-board first-aid requirements. Unnecessary items have been eliminated from first aid kits so that more kits can be provided. Furthermore, a trained first-aid attendant will only be required on aircraft with three employees or more, and only when one of those employees is not part of the flight crew.
The proposed amendments appeared in the Canada Gazette on September 19, 2009.
