Fire Safety Planning at Work

Fire safety planning plays an important role in ensuring preparedness in the event of a fire emergency. The right time to start planning and practicing a fire escape plan is now.

Evacuation plans and procedures vary from building to building. Your building fire safety plan should contain information on the specific fire alarm system that is currently installed, and the evacuation procedures related to its operation.

To improve responses to a fire emergency, it is critical to know the following:

  • the location of at least two designated emergency exits;
  • the location of the fire alarm stations, fire extinguishers and other fire protection equipment; and
  • the identity and location of the fire emergency officer(s).

For more information, please see Guide to Fire Safety Planning.

Mobility-impaired occupants, requiring evacuation assistance, are responsible for advising their floor monitors. If possible, both the monitors and mobility-impaired person(s) should practice a simulated evacuation exercise. This will help determine the level of needed assistance, and will help improve the evacuation exercise in the event of a real fire emergency.
