Aboriginal Labour Market Programs
The Government of Canada is working to improve economic outcomes for Aboriginal people. Specific Aboriginal labour market programs are available to increase workforce participation and help First Nations, Métis and Inuit people prepare for, find and maintain employment.
Aboriginal agreement holders deliver Aboriginal labour market programs through an extensive network of service points across Canada.
Skills and Employment Training Strategy
The Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS) is a key component of the Federal Framework for Aboriginal Economic Development.
ASETS is a five-year strategy that focuses on three priorities:
- supporting demand-driven skills development;
- fostering partnerships with the private sector, provinces and territories; and
- placing emphasis on accountability and results.
Skills and Employment Partnership
The Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership (ASEP) is nationally managed, opportunity-driven, project-based program that:
- promotes maximum, sustainable employment for Aboriginal people in major economic developments; and
- supports multi-year training strategies developed by Aboriginal organizations and industry employers.
Skills and Partnership Fund
The Skills and Partnership Fund (SPF) is available to all Aboriginal organizations, including those who are not current Aboriginal agreement holders. The SPF:
- drives innovation in service delivery and systems through partnership (system improvement);
- responds to economic partnership opportunities with targeted labour force development initiatives (training-to-employment); and
- addresses program delivery weaknesses and/or gaps in Canada's network of Aboriginal organizations that provide labour market services (service delivery gaps).
